Michael Awosanya is a dynamic cultural entrepreneur and the visionary co-founder behind Afro+ Fest, the East Coast’s first large-scale festival celebrating the full spectrum of global Black music. Born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Michael draws on his Nigerian heritage and a lifelong passion for music—having played keyboard, saxophone, and drums from an early age in his church community. Michael’s journey began as a student at Towson University, where he studied accounting and honed his skills in event production, working alongside peers from the DMV’s African Student Associations to create the Change Foundation. What started as college dance battles and nightlife events for over a thousand attendees quickly evolved into large-scale productions, laying the groundwork for what would become Afro+ Fest. With a keen eye for both creative and operational excellence, Michael has overseen the festival’s rapid growth—from a grassroots collective to a professional team employing hundreds of staff members and collaborating with major partners. His leadership style is marked by transparency, accountability, and a deep commitment to community impact, regularly incorporating local talent, interns, and Black-owned businesses into every touchpoint of the festival. Michael’s vision for Afro+ Fest is rooted in the belief that “Afro is everywhere”—uniting the diaspora and their allies through music, art, fashion, and entrepreneurship. Under his stewardship, Afro+ Fest is not just a concert, but a vibrant crossroads of culture, economic opportunity, and creative expression for the global Black community. When he’s not producing major events, Michael is an accomplished MC, frequently hosting weddings and community gatherings, and is passionate about mentorship, gaming, and giving back through service initiatives. His practical approach, inspired by a “hustle mentality” and a dedication to uplifting others, continues to shape Afro+ Fest’s mission and growth.
