ARTISTRY SPOTLIGHT: Crystal "Cris" Colbert


"Im Crystal but everyone knows me as Cris. Im a 23 year old artist from the DMV area. ive been tattooing for 6 years. I love to travel and meet new people. Very fun to be around and easy to get along with. "

MEDIA PRINCE: When did you begin doing in the world of tattoos?

It began with my passion for art and drawings and how I can make my canvasses come alive.

MEDIA PRINCE: What inspired you to pursue tattoos?

Ive been getting tattoos since I was 14 and figured that it would be a cool hobby to get into since i was already into it.

MEDIA PRINCE: What elements do you look for when it comes to creating art and painting a picture to the skin?

I try to give it character and originality. but most importantly to make sure that its what the person asked for and to add some of my style to it.

MEDIA PRINCE: What is your view on the current state of art and tattoos?

Art is on an uprising. more and more people are starting to explore there artistic side and I think its a beautiful thing.

MEDIA PRINCE: How do you keep yourself on your toes in relation to creating something totally yours?

I normally know or have an idea of what im going to do before I do it. sometimes i look at other artists work and pick up small elements that I like.

MEDIA PRINCE: What advice do you have for that little boy or girl who wants to do what you do?

I would tell them to stay focused and not to get frustrated. You have to study and read up about the basics of tattooing. The tattoo industry is a hard one to get into it especially when your young and black. its definitely not as easy as it looks

MEDIA PRINCE: What is the biggest misconception about tattoo artists?

Wow. thats pretty easy. alot of people may think that tattoo artist are a little rowdy or have criminal ways. alot of people judge us before they actually meet us.

MEDIA PRINCE: How do you want the people to feel after leaving your chair and your presence?

I want people to feel comfortable and happy. I want them to feel like they can come back and recommend me to friends and family.

MEDIA PRINCE: Would you consider your tattoos as your personal form of art?

Definitely my personal form of art.

MEDIA PRINCE: Does Tattooing allow you to relieve stress?

Tattooing does allow me to get away. Its my escape from everything else thats going on.

MEDIA PRINCE: What is next for you?

Hopefully to own my own shop. Maybe 4 or 5 other artist.
